Police arrested a Richmond man in connection with this morning’s robbery and shooting at Hillside Court.

Authorities found Marcellus D. Walters, 20, in the 1600 block of Elmdale Avenue, about an hour after the shooting. Walters, of the 1400 block of Drewry Street, was charged with robbery, malicious wounding, and use of a firearm in a felony.

A contractor was shot in the stomach while working with a painting crew at Hillside Court in South Richmond.

The victim was taken to VCU Medical Center with what were initially believed to be life-threatening injuries, but his condition appeared to stabilize later in the day, police said.

The shooting was reported at 7:47 a.m. in the 1700 block of Southlawn Avenue. Authorities said the victim’s coworkers put him in a pickup truck and drove him to Hillside Court’s rental office to get help.

The gunman, believed to have taken a gold chain necklace, was seen running toward Commerce Road, and police called in canine units and an airplane to help in the search. — Joe Macenka and Chris I. Young
