Conservatives Protest House Health Care Bill; While AARP Endorses It
Washington, D.C. (1140wrva.com) – Virginians and Richmonders headed up to Washington Thursday afternoon for a hastily organized protest against the health care reform bill. Matt Whitworth, who has protested at Richmond Tea Parties, estimates there were tens of thousand at the event at the U.S. Capitol.
Whitworth says he went to Washington because he does not want the government taking over one-sixth of the U.S. economy. He says reform is needed, but there are ways to do it without getting government involved.
The AARP, and AARP Virginia, came out Thursday in support of the bill. AARP State Director Bill Kallio says it will enable people without health insurance to receive it, and for those who would like better plans to get them. Attending the press conference with him were Virginia seniors who said health care reform would greatly benefit them, including one man who returned to work after a stroke and cancer just to continue to receive health insurance.
