Department Says Many Rules Violated In Incident Near Ferrum

Ferrum, VA (1140wrva.com) – The Virginia Department of Game And Inland Fisheries in emphasizing hunting laws and ethics after a Ferrum College student was killed, and a second wounded, in an incident Tuesday.  23 year old Jessica Goode of Frederick County died after being shot in the chest, and 20-year-old Regis J. Boudinot of McLean was shot in the hand. A third student wasn’t injured.

The students had been searching for frogs for a class project.  The shooter, 31 year old Jason Cloutier, was allegedly hunting on private land where he was not supposed to be.

Game Spokeswoman Julia Dixon says hunters are supposed to only hunt where they are permitted, and are supposed to clearly identify their targets and anything in the shot path.  She also recommends that people in rural areas consider wearing bright clothing when they go into the woods to avoid becoming a target.

Dixon stresses that overall, incidents like this are rare, and hunters are a safe group of people.
